Red Wings cut 12 more players

6 years agoAccording to their official website, the Red Wings have trimmed their roster by 12, sending three players to the AHL and releasing nine players from tryout contracts.
DETROIT – The Detroit Red Wings today assigned right wing Zach Nastasiuk, defenseman Dan Renouf and goaltender Matej Machovsky to the American Hockey League’s Grand Rapids Griffins. Additionally, the Red Wings released forwards Mike Borkowski, Austen Brassard, Connor Crisp, Luke Esposito and Dominik Shine; defensemen Simon Denis, Pat McCarron and Kevin Tansey; and goaltender Pat Nagle from their tryout contracts.
The Red Wings’ roster currently sits at 48 players (27 forwards, 16 defensemen and five goaltenders) as the Red Wings play the second of four-straight preseason home games tonight against the Pittsburgh Penguins (7:30 p.m. on FOX Sports Detroit/97.1 The Ticket). Detroit will also take on the Chicago Blackhawks (Thursday at 7:30 p.m.) and Toronto Maple Leafs (Friday at 7:30 p.m.) at Little Caesars Arena before concluding the preseason in Toronto against the Maple Leafs on Saturday at 7:00 p.m.
Of course, none of these players getting sent down or released are surprising at all. At this point, it’s pretty obvious who’s going to crack the Wings roster to open the 2017-18 season. The main points of discussion are what’s going to happen with Andreas Athanasiou, how Ken Holland is going to dance around the salary cap, and whether or not a young player like Tyler Bertuzzi will crack the lineup despite not having to clear waivers.
The Wings have four more pre-season games before opening the season on Oct. 5 against the Minnesota Wild.
