The trade deadline is here and the Red Wings are making moves. This time of year, specifically, sees a ton of activity on the waiver wire. Once the deadline passes, NHL teams are limited on call-ups and anyone not on an AHL roster by 3 P.M. ET isn’t eligible to play in the minors the rest of the season.
That set the stage for the Red Wings to nab someone. Being the 31st ranked team in the league, that gives Detroit the first priority selection on the waiver wire. They took advantage of their standings placement by claiming Cody Golobef from Ottawa earlier in the week. The claim they put in on Monday afternoon is considerably more exciting: The Red Wings have claimed Dmytro Timashov from the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Timashov is a 23-year-old winger with four goals and nine points in 39 games this season. Toronto couldn’t fit him on their roster following the acquisition of Denis Malgin. Before, Timashov spent the past three seasons with the Toronto Marlies in the AHL. In 2018-19 he registered an impressive 49 points in 72 games with the Marlies.
His NHL career to date has been average from an analytical perspective.
Nevertheless, a team like Detroit should be taking chances on as many youthful players as they can. Known to be a high-skill forward, giving Timashov a shot for basically free is a no-brainer.
To note: Because the window to assign Timashov to the AHL has passed, he’ll have to remain with the NHL team for the remainder of the season. He will be a restricted free agent this Summer.
