Red Wings at Islanders | OddsShark Matchup Report

The Red Wings were riding a two-game winning streak into their matchup against the Buffalo Sabres on Sunday. Unfortunately for Detroit, Jonathan Bernier was scratched from that game with a lower-body injury, which led to Jimmy Howard getting the start in a 5-1 loss at home. Since going 2-5 with a 3.21 GAA and a .910 save percentage in seven October starts, Howard is 0-10-1 in his last 11 appearances with a 4.79 GAA and a .856 save percentage. With Bernier expected to be out until at least the All-Star Break, Howard will be back in net on Tuesday.
In their last six games against the Islanders, the Red Wings are 1-5 on the moneyline per the OddsShark NHL Database.
Through the first two weeks of January, the Islanders rank dead last in the NHL in scoring with just 1.67 goals per game over their last six games. New York’s disappointing offensive output has led to a 2-3-1 record over the Islanders’ last six games, and since starting the season with a 16-3-1 record, New York is 11-10-3 over its last 24 games. The Islanders offense will have a golden opportunity to break out of its slump against the struggling Jimmy Howard in this one.
Tuesday night’s total is set at 5.5 goals at sports betting sites. The OVER is 6-1 in Detroit’s last seven road games against the Islanders.
Jonathan Bernier’s recent play has been one of the few bright spots for the Red Wings in this tough 2019-20 season as the goaltender was 5-3 over his last eight starts with a 2.09 GAA and a .937 save percentage. Detroit will need Jimmy Howard to find his form in a hurry if the team hopes to avoid another long losing streak.
