Jimmy Howard had his best game of the season on Tuesday against the Edmonton Oilers, stopping 31 of the 32 shots that he faced en route to a 3-1 home win. Detroit only managed to get two goals past Mikko Koskinen, but both came in the first period which allowed the Red Wings to set the tempo for the rest of the game on defense. Dylan Larkin had a goal and an assist for the second straight game, a welcome development after the young center went without a point in his previous five games.
The Red Wings are 0-4 in their last four games on the road and have been outscored 19 to 5 over that stretch per the OddsShark NHL Database.
Carolina lost the final three games of an underwhelming four-game road trip last month, but have since kicked off their current four-game homestand with back-to-back wins over the Chicago Blackhawks and Calgary Flames. Former Red Wings goaltender Petr Mrazek is off to a great start to the 2019-20 season with a 2.24 goals against average and a 6-1-1 record through his first eight games. The Hurricanes are playing the first night of a back-to-back in this one, so backup James Reimer is likely to get the start on either Friday against Detroit or Saturday against the New Jersey Devils.
Friday night’s total is set at six goals at sports betting sites. The UNDER is 5-1 in the last six games between Carolina and Detroit.
Detroit has had Carolina’s number in recent years, especially in this building. With the superior record (8-3-1) and defense, the Hurricanes deserve to be the betting favorite in this one, but the game may wind up being more competitive than the odds would indicate.
