The Red Wings peppered John Gibson with 32 shots on Tuesday night but only managed to get one through in their 3-1 loss to the Anaheim Ducks. The second-period tally looked like it might be enough as Detroit led the game 1-0 heading into the third period, but the Ducks scored three goals in the first 10 minutes of the third period to pick up the road win. Detroit fell to 2-1 on the season with the loss, but is still 8-3 in its last 11 games overall.
In their last 11 road games against the Canadiens, the Red Wings are just 1-10 per the OddsShark NHL Database. Each of Montreal’s last five home wins over the Red Wings have come by two or more goals while the one loss came in overtime.
Montreal has earned points in all three of its games so far in 2019, but two of those three results have been overtime losses. The Canadiens’ defense has been torched for 14 goals over the team’s season-opening road trip at Carolina, at Toronto, and at Buffalo. The Habs come home for their season home opener on Thursday night after finishing last season on a 5-0 run in their final five home games of 2019-20.
Thursday night’s total is set at six goals at sports betting sites. The OVER is 6-2 in Montreal’s last eight games against Detroit.
Each of Montreal’s first three games have been close, high-scoring affairs. The Red Wings have given up exactly three goals in each of their first three games while averaging 3.33 goals per game over that stretch. On paper, this one has the makings of a good old fashioned shootout.
