Many here know about the Red Wings Alumni game coming up next month in Colorado, but how many know about the continuous Red Wings Alumni Association games that go on every season?
The Detroit Red Wings Alumni Association is an officially sanctioned and has seasons just as the NHL does, only they play for charity. Millions of dollars have been raised for local charities and local minor league hockey leagues and teams.
After years of alumni meeting up for lunch, on November 1, 1959 the first official meeting took place and on April 21, 1960, the Red Wings Alumni Association was officially incorporated with the mission to have fun and enjoy the fellowship of the group while raising money for charitable organizations and individuals that are in need of financial assistance.
Each year the organization donates north of $40,000 to those in Michigan and Ontario, the money all raised through the games and events throughout their season. None of the Alumni are given compensation for their time, in order to raise the most money possible for those in need, one of the many reasons the Detroit Red Wings Alumni Association is one of the most well respected Alumni Associations in professional sports.
This past weekend the Alumni played in Novi against a team made up of Novi police and fire. This is a yearly game that is marked on the calendar for the Alumni and the people of Novi.
