The newest member to the Detroit Red Wings organization, is 19-year old goalie Kaden Fulcher. The Brigden, Ontario native was invited to the Wings camp and made a good enough impression to earn himself a 3-year entry level contract.
Fulcher, a 6’3 netminder who went undrafted this past draft currently plays for the Hamilton Bulldogs of the OHL and his stats have not looked pretty. In 43 games last year, he put up a .891 save percentage and a 3.21 GAA. However he is off to a nice start this season. So far in 4 games, he has a .935 save percentage and a 1.92 GAA. Obviously these stats will most likely not be as outstanding as they are currently, but it is still worth mentioning.
“Being the only undrafted guy here as a goaltender, actually made it seem like their was less pressure on me.” Fulcher said at the Wings 2017 Prospects Development Camp “I just came in with a quiet confidence saying, look, I can compete against these guys.”
The last time Detroit signed an undrafted free agent under the age of 20, was Joe Hicketts back in 2014, and that has turned out to be a nice gamble for both sides. Fulcher will now be entering an organization that has been loading up on goaltenders the past few years, so it should be interesting to see if he will be able to emerge on top. All these recent goaltender acquisitions has me wondering if management is preparing to move on from both Jimmy Howard and Petr Mrazek in the next few years.
