The world of Canadian junior hockey can get quite hectic at this time of year. Due to championship windows in the CHL only lasting one or two seasons, once a team falls off they really fall off. In many cases, the on ice product completely collapses. So as trade deadlines near, and teams have an idea of where they will finish in the standings, you will often see massive fire sales.
The latest team to enter a rebuild is the Halifax Mooseheads. After years of dominance, which included the opportunity to host the Memorial Cup last season, the franchise is taking a step back. Thursday afternoon, reports surfaced of some impending deals they have agreed to in principle. One of which includes Red Wings prospect Jared McIsaac. Per report, Halifax is sending McIsaac to the Moncton Wildcats (QMJHL), along with Anaheim prospect Benoit-Olivier Groulx.
McIsaac was drafted 36th overall by Detroit in the 2018 NHL Draft. His draft-plus-one year went very well, making Team Canada’s World Junior Championship roster, as well as scoring 16 goals and 62 points in 53 games for Halifax. This season, the 19-year-old blue-liner has only played in 3 games due to a lengthy injury. He is currently away with Team Canada at their World Junior Championship selection camp. He will be a lock to make the team.
The reasoning behind moving on from McIsaac is because he will turn pro with either Detroit or Grand Rapids next season. Due to Halifax’s little championship hopes, keeping McIsaac would be the equivalent of a basement NHL team hanging on to a veteran set to hit unrestricted free agency in the Summer, but even worse.
Departing from the middling Mooseheads for the powerhouse Moncton Wildcats is huge for his development. Moncton currently sits third in QMJHL standings with a 22-9-0 record. Going out and acquiring the services of McIsaac and Groulx is a sign that they are going all in on a Memorial Cup run.
The trade will be announced after the World Juniors, due to QMJHL restrictions.
