Postgame: Glendening Shorty Wins it Late in Arizona

After a tough loss in Dallas, the Red Wings faced off against a hungry Coyotes team, who were looking for their first win of the season.

Despite numerous penalties, and Clayton Keller giving the Wings a tough time with a couple of leads, the Red Wings would come out on top with a 4-2 win, and keep their winning record alive early on in the season.

Nobody scored during the first period, but the Wings sure were trying their best to let Arizona get a power play goal. The Wings took four penalties during the first, including two 30 seconds apart to give the Coyotes a 5 on 3, but the Wings killed off all of them, and kept the game scoreless.

Howard was excellent in the first, stopping all 11 shots his way in the frame.

The second saw a new goalie in for Arizona, as Louie Domingue would replace Annti Raanta for unknown reasons. Clayton Keller opened the scoring 6:12 in on the power play by jamming it through a scramble (and a sliding Nick Jensen) to give the Coyotes a 1-0 lead. However, the Wings responded with a power play goal of their own, as Martin Frk blasted home a one timer to tie the game.

The Coyotes responded late in the period, as Keller would score his second of the game with 1:44 left in the period to give Arizona a 2-1 lead. That lead would last a solid 1:02, as Henrik Zetterberg would get his second of the season to tie the game at 2-2 to go into the second intermission.

The goals were much harder to come by in the third, as both Howard and Domingue were both strong between the pipes. Both teams had a couple power plays to work with, but it wasn’t until the final power play for Arizona where something actually happened. Larkin would make a great rush to create a shorthanded 2 on 1, and pass it to Glendening for the shorthanded goal.

With 3:24 left in the game, that would just about do it. Frans Nielsen would get credit for the empty net goal to make it 4-2, and that would be your final score.

Gotta give it to Dylan Larkin, who had two primary assists, setting up Zetterberg’s tying goal, and a great play to set up Glendening’s winner on the PK.

With two assists on the game, Mike Green already has seven assists in only four games, which is second to Evgeny Kuznetsov’s eight.

The Red Wings will make a little bit of history, as they’ll play their first ever game against the undefeated Vegas Golden Knights at 10:30 pm tomorrow night (or today, depending on if you’re reading this on your morning commute).
