In a season full of ugly losses, the Red Wings suffered one of their worst to date in an 8-2 blowout loss against the New York Islanders. Jimmy Howard was pulled after giving up three goals on seven shots while Calvin Pickard gave up five goals on 19 shots in relief. With the ugly start, Howard now owns a hideous 2-16-1 record in 2019-20 to go along with a 4.26 goals against average and a .876 save percentage. Things don’t get any easier for Detroit on Friday with Pittsburgh and the sixth best offense in the NHL coming to town.
Since opening the season with a 3-1 record, the Red Wings are 9-31-3 over their last 43 games.
The Penguins opened the season with a 11-7-4 record with Matt Murray as their starting goaltender. But since Tristan Jarry has taken over the starting role, the Penguins are 18-6-1 over their last 25 games. Jarry has been outstanding with a 2.16 GAA and a .929 save percentage, giving the Penguins a top-eight defense (allowing 2.74 goals per game) to go along with an offense that is producing 3.38 goals per game. And with Sidney Crosby back in the fold after missing 28 games, things should only get better over the second half.
Friday night’s total is set at six goals at online betting sites. The OVER is 13-5 in Detroit’s last 18 games against Pittsburgh.
Pittsburgh will be playing its third game in four nights and its second game of a back-to-back on Friday night. The Red Wings can hope to catch the Penguins tired on Friday night and try to take advantage if Matt Murray is in goal instead of Tristan Jarry, but none of that is going to matter if Detroit can’t keep the puck out of its own net.
