Nyquist suspended for six games
By Zach Laing
7 years agoAccording to TSN’s Bob McKenzie, Gustav Nyquist will sit for six games for his spear to Minnesota Wild’s Jared Spurgeon
The incident is now well known as one of the most vicious on ice attacks in recent memory. Seconds after Spurgeon hit Nyquist from behind into the boards, Nyquist stood up and retaliated in a way nobody ever expected.
With two hands on his stick, he lunged the blade of his stick right into Spurgeon’s face.
However, this isn’t the first time we’ve seen players use sticks as weapons. As written by John Shipley of the Pioneer Press, there have been a handful of stick related incidents.
One of the more recent was last season when Duncan Keith used his stick to hit Minnesota Wild’s Charlie Coyle across the face last year. Keith also received a six game suspension for it.Keith also slashed LA King’s Jeff Carter across the face in 2013.
The Wings will be without Nyquist for games against the St. Louis Blues tonight, the Washington Capitals on Saturday, the Pittsburgh Penguins Sunday, the New York Islanders on Feb. 21, the Vancouver Canucks on Feb. 28 and the Calgary Flames on Mar 3.
Nyquist is eligible to return on Mar 4. when the Red Wings visit Rogers Place.
