NHL History: Today in 2006, Detroit Red Wings Steve Yzerman announces retirement

One of the biggest faces of the Detroit Red Wings franchise announced his retirement 14 years ago today.

Drafted by the Red Wings in the 1st round fourth-overall in the 1983 draft, Yzerman spent his full 1514 game, 22-year career with the club hoisting three Stanley Cups in that time.

Yzerman ranks among the top players in Red Wings history playing in the fourth-most games (1514), second in goals (692), first in assists (1063) and second in points (1755).

Named captain at 21-years-old, he became the longest-serving captain in league history and shortly after his retirement, Yzerman was named vice-president of the Red Wings a title he held until 2010.

Through his playing career, he only made one all-star game appearance. Yzerman also won the Lester B. Pearson trophy, Conn Smythe trophy, Frank J. Selke trophy and Bill Masterton trophy once each.

He left the organization in 2010 to take a similar vice-president while also being named general manger. Yzerman has been serving as the Red Wings general manager since 2019.
