Ken Holland top target in Oilers GM search

The Red Wings front office is starting to see dramatic changes. Steve Yzerman was introduced as the new general manager two weeks ago, and it appears Pat Verbeek will be joining the organization as Yzerman’s “right-hand man.” Coinciding with these additions was moving former GM Ken Holland to an advisory role, in which it was announced that Holland signed a multi-year extension.

Alas, it is clear Holland still has an itch to drive the bus. With other endeavors on the table he must decide if he wants to become the GM elsewhere, or remain a Red Wing for life. His title change ends a 22-year run where he controlled all hockey operations, culminating in three Stanley Cups since he became GM in the summer of 1997.

With Kelly McCrimmon recently being promoted to Vegas GM, Holland has quickly became the most sought after target for teams with a vacant GM position. The two teams that are in the GM market include the Edmonton Oilers and the franchise coming to Seattle. The Seattle search is not as urgent as Edmonton, who moved on from Peter Chiarelli after three and a half dreadful seasons.

Several reports indicate Holland is Edmonton’s main target, keeping several other candidates on hold as they await Holland’s decision. The two sides had extensive talks with Holland being offered full autonomy if he accepts their proposal. A decision is expected in the coming days.

The implications of where Holland lands will have a deep impact on the Red Wings. A year for Yzerman to work alongside Holland is valuable experience for a relatively young GM. Either way, Holland’s efforts to bring Yzerman back home is truly emphasized, as he is not 100% ready to slow down, revealing how much he truly cares about the Red Wings organization.
