Detroit sports are a hold bunch of meh right now, and that might be putting it nicely. The Red Wings might be the best bet for optimism.
On Wednesday afternoon The Athletic released their top-25 under 25 Detroit athletes, as voted on by their staff. The Red Wings were very much prevalent on the list, tying the Detroit Tigers for most players on the list with eight. The list was a mixed-bag of current athletes in the big leagues and prospects, both of which included Wings.
Dylan Larkin was voted as the best young athlete in Detroit, which shouldn’t come as a surprise. There is a strong case to be made that Larkin is up there with the Lions’ Matthew Stafford and the Pistons’ Blake Griffin as the best athlete in Detroit, regardless of age.
The Red Wings also saw Filip Zadina and Anthony Mantha crack the top five. Zadina ranked fourth on the list despite never playing an NHL game. So the Zadina hype is real. Mantha tied with Lions Linebacker Jarrad Davis for the fifth spot.
The remainder of the list was sprinkled with Red Wings throughout. The other names included were Michael Rasmussen, Andreas Athanasiou, Filip Hronek, Joe Veleno, and Dennis Cholowski. A lot of prospects in there to get you a little more optimistic for the future.
It’s safe to say the Red Wings have the brightest future in Detroit. Baseball season might be ending in September, and Sundays might be bleak, but at least the Wings will be the main attraction at Little Caesars Arena!
