A busy day continues for the Detroit Red Wings. In the third round, the organization drafted defenceman Donovan Sebrango from the OHL’s Kitchner Rangers.
The club also held the 65th overall pick, but traded it to the Minnesota Wild for the 70th and 132nd overall picks. With the 70th pick, Detroit used it to select defenceman Eemil Viro from TPS in the Sm-Liiga.
Sebrango, who stands at 6’1, 183 lbs., scored six goals and 30 points in 56 games in the OHL last year.
Here’s what EliteProspects had to say about Sebrango:
Can spin against pressure, work his inside edges on the blue line, and generally shows as nimble in small-ice situations. He’s not afraid to use the centre of the ice to effectively transition up-ice. Sebrango was decisive, took the right angles, and won puck battles on defensive zone retrievals.
Viro, meanwhile, stands at 6’0, 168 lbs. split time last year between TPS in the Liiga and the Jr. A Liiga. In the junior league, he scored one goal and six points in 15 games and in the big league scored three assists in 29 games. He is playing in the Liiga again this year appearing in two games scoring no points.
Here’s what EliteProspects wrote about Viro:
Viro doesn’t hesitate to engage the body in the defensive zone. He has good speed, strong mobility, and he can close gaps quickly. He can skate well, plays bigger than his size, and has proven able against men at an age when most are figuring out how to excel against juniors.
