The Detroit Red Wings have assigned their top pick in 2016, Dennis Cholowski (20th overall) to the WHL.
Cholowski, who I ranked as the Wings 5th best prospect, has had an impressive showing so far this preseason, tallying just 1 assist in 3 exhibition games but it was the little things that show reasons for optimism. His biggest weapon, his elite skating, was a big focal point as he did an excellent job leading the breakout. However, sending him down to play for the Prince George Cougars is the correct move. Cholowski is a good year or two away from being NHL ready, not to mention the Wings defense corps is extremely cluttered, especially with Joe Hicketts now in the mix.
As Head Coach Jeff Blashill pointed out, Dennis needs to become more commanding for the puck and take control. Some extra development in a new pro lifestyle should help his progress, and I wouldn’t mind seeing him gets some AHL action at some point before the NHL.
From what wasn’t an ideal season at St. Cloud State University last year, Cholowski will be transitioning to the WHL to play for the Prince George Cougars. He filled out his frame quite nicely this summer and his confidence right now is through the roof.
This should help set him up to take some drastic steps in his development. In a league where skating is essential, Cholowski should give Wings fans hope for a bright future on the horizon.
