@Trevor Zegras may have started a trend.
Detroit Red Wings prospect @Cross Hanas certainly seems to have been inspired by the highlight-reel goal cooked up by Anaheim Ducks forwards @Sonny Milano and Zegras earlier this month.
From the moment Milano batted Zegras’ flip pass by Buffalo Sabres goaltender @Malcolm Subban, it seemed inevitable that there would be some copycat plays around the hockey world. We’ve seen players try to replicate the move in practice … and now, it’s found its way into another game.
In the third period of Saturday’s Portland Winterhawks game against the Spokane Chiefs, Hanas corralled the puck before flipping it over Spokane’s net for Winterhawks teammate James Stefan to bat past Chiefs goaltender Mason Beaupit.
Hanas picked up the lone helper on Stefan’s 11th goal of the season, which gave the Winterhawks a 4–1 lead with 7:20 remaining in regulation.
The Red Wings originally selected Hanas with their third of three second-round picks in the 2020 draft, taking him 55th overall. The 19-year-old right wing leads the Winterhawks with 27 points (eight goals, 19 assists) in 28 games this season.
Hanas has yet to sign an entry-level contract with Detroit, which holds his exclusive NHL negotiating rights until June 1, 2022.
