The start to the season couldn’t have gone any better for the Red Wings. Currently undeafted though two games, beating two power houses in the Western Conference, Detroit has been carried by their otherworldly first line. One of Dylan Larkin, Anthony Mantha, or Tyler Bertuzzi has picked up a point on 8 of Detroit’s 9 goals this season.
Mantha, in particular, has been the alpha of the line. He is tied for the lead league in goals with 5 (although is considered first because of games played), second in the league in points with 7, and T-5th in the league in shots. His spectacular 4 goal performance against Dallas was one of the best games we’ve seen from a Red Wing this decade.
Mantha’s red hot start was good enough to earn him the NHL’s second star of the week honors.
Now his absurd shooting percentage of 38.5 will obviously regress, but what seems different about Mantha is how he is constantly looking for a shot. On the powerplay he has been a machine, one-timer after one-timer. If he keeps it up, the goals will keep coming his way.
What have you thought of “The Flying Frechman” so far? Was he snubbed of the first star? Which of his 5 goals has been the best? Let us know in the comment section below!
