The Detroit Red Wings suffered through a historically bad season in 2019-20 when they went just 17-49-5 in 71 games before the regular season was cut short by the coronavirus pandemic. The Red Wings will try to bounce back with a stronger campaign in 2021.
Detroit is the longest shot on the betting board at +15000 on the 2021 Stanley Cup odds at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com. The Red Wings were clearly the worst team in the NHL by a wide margin last season. There was no tanking involved, and in a fair draft system Detroit would have received the first overall pick that they desperately needed to get better.
Instead, the Red Wings fell all the way down to pick No. 4 due to bad luck in the NHL Draft lottery. Detroit gets a solid building block for its future in left winger Lucas Raymond, but the 18-year-old is unlikely to have the immediate impact that Alexis Lafreniere or Quinton Byfield would have.
So the Red Wings enter the upcoming season as massive underdogs to make the postseason. It doesn’t help that they play in the same division as three of the top six Stanley Cup contenders at sports betting sites in the defending champion Tampa Bay Lightning (+750 to win the Stanley Cup), the Boston Bruins (+1200), and the Toronto Maple Leafs (+1800). The Florida Panthers (+5000), Montreal Canadiens (+5000), and Buffalo Sabres (+6600) will try to battle for a wild card spot behind those top three, leaving Detroit and the Ottawa Senators (+10000) at the bottom of the Atlantic Division food chain.
The Metropolitan Division is also loaded entering the new season with the Pittsburgh Penguins (+1800), Philadelphia Flyers (+2000), Washington Capitals (+2000), and New York Islanders (+2200) projected to battle it out for the division’s top seed. The Carolina Hurricanes (+2800), New York Rangers (+2800), Columbus Blue Jackets (+5000), and New Jersey Devils (+6000) round out the Eastern Conference.
The Western Conference is projected to boil down to the Colorado Avalanche (+800) out of the Central Division and the Vegas Golden Knights (+800) out of the Pacific Division. Other potential contenders out West on the NHL odds include the Dallas Stars (+2000), Edmonton Oilers (+2200), St. Louis Blues (+2200), and Vancouver Canucks (+2500).
