2016 NHL Draft Radar: Logan Brown

It happens every year. Some big kid with solid scoring numbers always finds a way to sneak his way into the top 5 or 10 in draft rankings every year, and they are drafted, and then they don’t pan out. But, could Logan Brown be a different case? Could he be the one that ends this streak of high drafted big boys? Let’s take a look.

THE STATS

To say that Logan Brown was terrible this season wouldn’t be giving him any credit. Putting up 74 points in 59 games is nothing to laugh at in the OHL, but it’s more than just that. Logan is a 6’6″ center, which means it’s very easy for him to push around kids in his age range. Also, there are just simply better point producers available early on in the draft for him to be considered to go in the top 5, or even top 10.

THE EYE TEST

Brown
is a huge center that excels at both ends of the ice. He can be
dominant in the offensive zone but takes care of his own end as well.
His 6’6 frame is key to his success as he uses his body to shield his
puck and his reach to keep it off other players sticks. He is not overly
physical for a player his size, but will finish every check and battle
down low very effectively. He has a good shot with a pro like release as
well as good creativity and maturity when passing the puck. (Tyler Parchem, Elite Prospects)
Like I said, it’s very easy for a guy of his height and weight to do good with kids his own age. He can push around smaller kids with ease. Whether or not his excellent two way play translates to the NHL will be the question.

IS HE A FIT FOR THE RED WINGS?

He could very well be a god fit for the Wings. After all, they just lost their top line center in Pavel Datsyuk, and Henrik Zetterberg probably isn’t too far behind him, so they may want to look for a replacement, which Brown very well could be. But, it’s highly unlikely he makes it to the Wings pick, since the lowest he’s projected to go is 12th. So, unless the Wings trade up, or he falls, it’s unlikely they get him.
