Earlier today, the Ken Holland got a great return in the Nick Jensen trade. Unfortunately for the Red Wings, when you lose your best defenseman, the team tends to suffer. And suffer they did tonight against the the Minnesota Wild as they lost 3-2 in regulation.
THE HIGHLIGHTS
- Honestly, the Wings didn’t play that bad of a game. Going down 2-0 in the first period ultimately did them in.
- Tyler Bertuzzi scored first off a beautiful deflection in front of the net. Just fantastic hand-eye coordination from the young winger.
- Mantha got the second goal off a great slapper from the point on the power play. It was his 15th goal of the season and his 8th point in his last five games. He’s on a real good stretch right now.
- Filip Hronek assisted on both Red Wings goals tonight. He looked really good offensively tonight. He’s had some bad defensive plays, but those are mistakes that can be ironed out of a rookie’s game with experience. My vote is to keep him in the lineup.
- Jonathan Bernier actually played a pretty good game. He had a rough start, but he ended up turning away 32 Minnesota shots, coming up big in the third period on more than one occasion. With Howard sick, this is the kind of game the Wings needed from Bernier. It’s too bad the players couldn’t add more on the other end of the ice.
FINAL THOUGHT
For as much shit as Blashill takes, the young guys have been getting a lot of important minutes and playing well. Both Hronek and Michael Rasmussen were on the ice in the final two minutes of the game, when the Wings were down by one. The first power play unit was Mantha, Bertuzzi, Hronek, Andreas Athanasiou, and Dylan Larkin. All youth and all contributing.
The team is going younger and they are playing better. We’re in for another rough year of Red Wings hockey, but at least they are trending in the right direction.
