Well at least when they lose, they do so in spectacular fashion. Going into the third period, the Red Wings were down 4-1 against the Chicago Blackhawks. Over the course of the 3rd, they completed a miraculous comeback only to drop the game 5-4 in overtime.
THE HIGHLIGHTS
- Dylan Larkin, Anthony Mantha, and Tyler Bertuzzi make an amazing top line, but what happens when you throw Andreas Athanasiou into the mix?
- Larkin had two goals and an assist, Mantha had four assists, and Athanasiou had two goals, including the game-tying goal. Here are some of the nicer ones:
so very beautiful
ATHANASIOU!!!! What. A. Goal.
- Filip Hronek had a decent game, but a rough start. He was stripped of the puck behind his own net on the Hawks first goal. Not a good look for the young developing defenseman, but a good learning moment.
- Patrick Kane picked the Wings apart. Again. He scored twice, including the game winner.
- Defenseman Erik Gustafsson had a strong night for the Hawks. He had three assists.
- After an on-ice ceremony with his family celebrating his 500th game, Jimmy Howard was yanked from the net after allowing four goals on eight shots through the first 21 minutes of the game. Not a great showing for Detroit’s starting goaltender.
FINAL THOUGHTS
Where was all that offense in the first two periods? Larkin and Bertuzzi directed a lot of traffic towards the net. Their line dominated in possession. The Red Wings bottom-9 was incredibly quiet tonight and offered no support to their leading scorers. This lack of depth and talent down the lines is really what’s doing this team in. It is going to be hard to move some of their albatross contracts, but not bringing Thomas Vanek back next year will be a good start. They need to bring in some players that can keep up with Athanasiou on a 2nd line and offer more depth scoring to Larkin, Mantha, and Gustav Nyquist. These young players can’t carry this team on their backs to the playoffs. They need support, something which was very clearly lacking tonight.
