In a Saturday matinee from Newark, New Jersey, the Red Wings downed the New Jersey Devils after another 3rd period comeback and overtime goal from Dylan Larkin. It’s the fourth time in six games that the Wings have come back from a two goal deficit to win.
THE HIGHLIGHTS
- The Wings had a really bad first period as they were out-shot 15 to 4 and badly out-attempted.
- Darren Helm left the game and didn’t come back after a bad collision with the boards. He was nursing his shoulder/arm on his way to the bench. I’m no doctor, but I have a feeling he is going to miss some time.
- By the midway point of the second period, they were down 2-0 after the Devils scored a shorthanded goal that Jonathan Bernier really should have saved.
- Luke Glendening and Michael Rasmussen are credited with the comeback goals. Rasmussen now has goals in consecutive games.
- Overtime was back-and-forth, as 3-on-3 hockey tends to be, but it was Dylan Larkin who put an end to it. After a perfect faceoff win in his own zone, Anthony Mantha and Larkin jumped into a 2-on-1 and our future captain made no mistake in ending it.
The OT winner!
FINAL THOUGHT
These come-from-behind victories have been incredibly fun to watch, but they are a dangerous trend. The Wings surrendered 40 shots on goal and Bernier turned away 38 of them. As I pointed out last week, they are over-relying on their goaltending. When Bernier and Howard come back down to earth, so will the rest of the team.
Still, watching the young guns lead the charge is encouraging. Dennis Cholowski, Andreas Athanasiou, Mantha, Rasmussen, and Larkin have all been great this season and give us all reason to hope.
And can we just make Larkin the captain already?
