With the final game of the season looming, the Red Wings continue to make roster tweaks for the Grand Rapids Griffins. Earlier this week, the team sent Evgeny Svechnikov and Joe Hicketts back to the Griffins. This afternoon, Sportsnet’s Chris Johnston reported that the team placed goaltender Jared Coreau on waivers.
Coreau is already confirmed to be the Red Wings starter in the final game of the season tonight against the New York Islanders. This move is being done to get him back to Grand Rapids for their playoff run. Coreau has a top-15 save percentage in the AHL this season at .916.
Despite his impressive season with the Griffins, Coreau failed to make an impact in Detroit. He was brought in to back-up Jimmy Howard after Petr Mrazek was traded and put up a dismal .859 save percentage over the course of six starts.
Don’t expect another team to claim him. At this point, playoff-bound teams have their rosters set and don’t need the additional help. It would be hilarious, though, if somebody claimed him. It would plunge Detroit’s goalie situation into an even deeper crisis than it’s in now.
For all you Coreau fans out there, don’t fret about this. We’ll likely see Jared back in the winged wheel next season as the full-time back-up goalie.
