Earlier this season, the NHL ditched their old partner, Reebok, for official NHL gear and signed a new deal with Adidas. Together, the two companies would “Form the Future” of NHL clothing worn on the backs of its athletes on the ice as well as on the backs of their fans off the ice.

As part of this week’s festivities in Las Vegas, Nevada, the NHL and Adidas held a three hour event for the press to unveil new jerseys for the 2017-18 NHL season. While some teams, such as the Nashville Predators, Edmonton Oilers, and Minnesota Wild received some dramatic upgrades (downgrades?), there wasn’t much changed about Detroit’s classic jerseys.

Other than the logo above the names, the Wings jerseys look almost identical to the Reebok ones. There is now what looks like a nameplate on the back of the jerseys and the stitching around the logo on the front has changed very subtly, but the Winged Wheel and stripe patterns on the bottom and sleeves has remained the same.

With a logo as legendary as the Winged Wheel, big change is normally avoided. This logo is iconic and, as part of the original six, historic. I don’t expect it to change for many years.

As part of this event, the NHL and Adidas also unveiled the jerseys for the Vegas Golden Knights’ inaugural season. The coat of arms logo, a Knight’s helmet with a large ‘V’ in the negative space, is accented by the black, gold, and red colours. I think they look as cool as a jersey for a team named the Golden Knights will be able to look.
