NHL 2016 Draft Radar: Jonathan Dahlen

The son of former NHL Ulf Dahlen, Jonathan Dahlen comes into the draft ranked 11th among European skaters by NHL central scouting.

A prospect splitting time in between the Timra under-20 and men’s team in the Swedish League, Dahlen projects to go anywhere in the late first or second round.

The Stats

Dahlen’s stats don’t blow anyone away, but context here is extremely important. Playing pro in Sweden isn’t exactly an easy task for a draft eligible player, and putting up a 0.57 points per game pace isn’t shabby at all. His point per game performance in the Ivan Hlinka is respectable as well and in all likelihood, he’ll end up on Sweden’s U20 team for next year’s WJC.

The Eye Test

Jimmy Hamrin from Hockey Prospectus had to this to say:

“Dahlén is a constant threat for defenders with his great vision, agility, puck skills and quick and accurate wrist shot. He developed greatly during this season and I think he can be a surprise first round pick that turns out well.”

Does he fit in with the Red Wings?

Dahlen projects as a potential NHLer within a few seasons, and is projected to go anywhere between the 25-60 range, where the Wings hold just a sole pick. If the Wings see a fit and he’s available, there’s no reason why he shouldn’t go to Detroit – but also no overwhelming reasons why he’s a can’t miss prospect either.
