Little Caesars Arena applies to host multiple NCAA championships including Frozen Four

It looks like Detroit may be the “City of Champions” once more but not in the most traditional sense. The Detroit Sports Commission and Little Caesars Arena (future home to the Detroit Red Wings) are tossing their hat into the ring for multiple events in the years ahead. Most importantly for hockey fans, they applied to host the Frozen Four. More hockey in the state of Michigan? Yes, please.

All of the bids made were during the 2019-2022 time frame. All bids are submitted in four year blocks to allow for a more efficient process. The completion of Little Caesars Arena is slated for early 2017.

According to the Detroit News, bids include the first and second rounds and regionals of the men’s NCAA basketball tournament, the NCAA hockey Frozen Four and the NCAA Division I wrestling championships.

Each application is paired with a school to establish set partnerships for the NCAA. In the case of the Frozen Four, Michigan State University in East Lansing is the current partner. Meanwhile the University of Michigan is the partner for the Division I Wrestling Championships.

When asked about the new Little Caesars Arena opening up, Executive Director of the Detroit Sports Commission had this to say about the building to the Detroit News:

“Definitely it’s a game-changer for us, a downtown location that fans can walk to and from a variety of bars and restaurants. There’s plenty of competition around the country with that sort of dynamic. This (new arena, development) creates opportunities.”

As the redevelopment of downtown Detroit continues, these types of bids are great events that can grab many tourists. The existing infrastructure is there, why shouldn’t they take advantage. I guess the movie “Field of Dreams” was right, if you build it, they will come.
