The Detroit Red Wings are emptying out most of their prospects playing around the country and funneling them into Grand Rapids. While that remains to be seen with Dennis Cholowski, the Wings have seen enough of the Canadian born defenseman and are wanting to accelerate his developmental path.

Cholowski played on a middling St. Cloud State team and he was tied for third on the team in defensemen scoring with twelve points. While Cholowski was one of the youngest players in the entire NCAA it doesn’t change the fact that his scoring wasn’t fantastic. It could be that he was still adjusting to the game but Cholowski is an interesting prospect.

He did relatively well in the BCHL, which is an okay league but not top competition by any stretch. Cholowski may see time with the Griffins but it wouldn’t be surprising to see him play with the Prince George Cougars, that own his rights, next year. The challenge of playing in the AHL may be a lot and the stepping stone of the WHL may be easier.

The goal will be constantly challenging him and making him into a better player. As of right now, he may have fallen behind fellow defensive draftee Filip Hronek. He can make up ground but showing off some more of his offensive flair would be for the best.

If both the Wings and Cholowski want to succeed, they’re going to need to take his development to the next level. Getting him out of the NCAA was likely the right move.
