It shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone at all that Brad Marchand has been fined for his actions when he slewfooted Niklas Kronwall. He was fined $10k, the maximum amount allowable for the NHL to fine a player under the CBA.

When will the NHL learn from it’s past mistakes? This type of play shouldn’t be allowed, period.

There has been an overwhelming problem of continued consistency from the DoPS since Brendan Shanahan left to helm the Maple Leafs. One play is scrutinized one way and a similar play is scrutinized in a completely different way. It should be troubling from a league perspective that they can’t seem to get it right.

This isn’t a criticism of the penalty levied against Marchand, this is just a comment on another odd decision by the DoPS. The type of play needs to be removed from the game, it could seriously injure someone and it is consistently done in NHL games, week after week. It can’t just be a fine, it needs to be a suspendable offense. 

Within the rules set by the CBA they did right by the Red Wings and that is important. Some liberties were taken against one of their older, more injury prone players. “Vigilante” justice wasn’t carried out but this should be good enough for fans hoping that Marchand was punished in some way.

At the very least, this should make their next match up all the more interesting.
