The Red Wings shocked the hockey world when they took Moritz Seider with the 6th overall pick at this year’s NHL Entry Draft. With a few projected top-line centers still on the board, Steve Yzerman and his crew opted for a big, right-handed defenseman out of Germany that few had seen going in the top-10.
Well this week, Hockeytown is getting to see what they have in Seider as he joined the rest of the Red Wings prospects for development camp in Detroit. What you’ll find in the clips below is a young player with a good stride and surprisingly smooth hands. If nothing else, he’s showing fans that maybe Yzerman wasn’t that crazy after all in drafting him at 6th overall.
Seider’s a smooth skater for a big boy. His back strides are a little choppy, but he has good acceleration and pretty good edgework too.

Here’s a run from Moritz Seider
Seider put on a bit of a clinic in the final game of the 3-on-3 tournament. Not only was his skating a highlight, but he showed off some silky smooth hands, dangling into the slot and even scoring a goal off his own rebound.
Some really nice moves from Mo Seider #53 in White
That Moritz Seider, what a guy. 🍎 #DRWDC
He showed off his defensive game, too, using his size to his advantage and breaking up any flow that the opposition tried to establish:
Seider showing how insanely calm and controlled he is in the defensive zone, a frustrating player to play against.
A nice defensive play by Seider not afraid to use his size to his advantage
I think a lot more comfort with the pick is setting in now that we’re seeing him on the ice more. The annual Red vs. White game is today, so I’m sure we’ll get even more clips to gush over.
