After a brief break for the Holiday season, the Red Wings were back in action for Saturday night hockey against the Florida Panthers. Looking to snap a four game losing streak, the Wings came out of the gate strong, dominating the first period, only to lose all of their momentum in the second. The final score ended up being 5-4.

THE HIGHLIGHTS

  • What a first period! The Red Wings out-shot the Panthers 17-11 and went to the dressing room with a 2-1 lead. It was a come-from-behind period as the Wings fell 1-0 less than three minutes into the game, but scored back-to-back goals 38 seconds apart to take the lead.
  • Filip Zadina had a great game, recording 12:51 of ice time and 2 shots. His big play was the assist on the Wings first goal, though. A beauty saucer pass to Darren Helm:
  • Dylan Larkin scored his 9th of the season off a beauty pass from Andreas Athanasiou, who was all over the ice tonight:
  • Before the Panthers mounted their comeback in the second period, Frans Nielsen finally scored his first of the season! It came on the penalty kill and was actually a beautiful snipe from the top of the faceoff circle:
  • Just over a minute after the Nielsen goal, Brett Connolly brought the Panthers a little closer. And four minutes after that, the Panthers scored two goals in nine seconds to take the lead back. This was the shift in momentum that I spoke about earlier. The Wings never recovered from it.
  • They did, however, have a late game push. Blashill pulled the goalie with just under five minutes to play and Luke Glendening banged home a rebound out front to bring the Wings within one:
  • A few more chances came after this, but it wasn’t enough. The Wings dropped the game.

GIF OF THE GAME

It was an entertaining game, but is anyone really surprised by the outcome? Pretty much par for the course for the this team this year.

MOTOR CITY MVP

Dylan Larkin because the kid deserves so much more than this. He also scored that goal.
