After Friday night’s game against the San Antonio Rampage, the Grand Rapids Griffins will be losing one of their key offensive contributors to the big club.
This comes after Dennis Cholowski was sent down to the Griffins this week and played his first AHL game Friday night. But now the other key blue line prospect is heading back up to the Red Wings.
Filip Hronek has had a very good season with both the Griffins and Wings. In the AHL, he has seven goals and 16 assists in just 28 games played for the club – absolutely astonishing numbers for a 21-year-old defenceman. He deserved this call-up by points alone.
But even when he has been in the NHL, Hronek has shown he belongs there. Three goals and seven assists in 23 games demonstrate his offensive game carrying over between the leagues.
He leads all Red Wings defenceman in on-ice CF% at 5v5 (52.36), while getting less than 50% of offensive zone starts.
The future looks fairly bright with both Hronek and Cholowski showing they deserve to be in the NHL at such a young age, something the Wings are certainly not used to.
