Friday night the Red Wings were in Raleigh, looking to win back-to-back games for the first time since opening weekend. Alas, the opportunistic Carolina Hurricanes brought their A-game, going on to win the game 7-3.
Defensive deficiencies gave Carolina too many chances to score and they did exactly that. The second period in particular is when the wheels started to fall off, netting four goals and chasing Jimmy Howard from the net. For the rest of the game they cruised to victory.
Thoughts and Highlights
- Detroit started the game off nicely. In the first period, Andreas Athanasiou displayed his high-end skating ability by quickly cutting towards the net to set up Anthony Mantha for his eighth goal of the season.
- There was some controversy on the Canes second goal. Warren Foegele appears to have thrown Howard off stride, not allowing the Detroit goaltender to push over and secure the rebound. After video review, the goal stood.
After review, it was determined that there was *no* goaltender interference on this play. #LGRW #LetsGoCanes
- Athanasiou and Mantha connected once again on the powerplay. Double-A set up Mantha for a one-timer at the right faceoff circle to beat Petr Mrazek. That spot might just be Mantha’s new office.
Athanasiou to Mantha for the second time tonight! Mantha is DEADLY from the right side. #LGRW
- Detroit’s final goal came courtesy of Tyler Bertuzzi. Dylan Larkin put rubber on net and Bertuzzi was there to tip it in.
Larkin shot is tipped in by Bertuzzi, who legitimately might be one of the best in the league at redirecting pucks. #LGRW
- Dennis Cholowski was a healthy scratch for the second game in a row, but I don’t anticipate that trend to continue. The pairing of Mike Green and Joe Hicketts and a rough night, to say the least. So rough that Jeff Blashill can’t possibly return to that combination.

Every Red Wings fan when they conceded a short handed goal…
Motor City MVP
Andreas Athanasiou
Athanasiou was buzzing all night. He set up both of Mantha’s goals, the first coming in spectacular fashion. He had his feet moving most of the night. Its only a matter of time until he gets that first goal.
Athanasiou is other-worldly fast. #LGRW
