How about that for a little Sunday afternoon action?! Seemingly pulling off the impossible, the Red Wings snapped Boston’s seven game winning streak in a 3-1 decision. Not only did Detroit take down a heavy weight, but they did so with a very deserving effort. They matched up physically, turning this into a heated affair..
Equally as notable, both Brendan Perlini and Andreas Athanasiou got the monkeys off their backs with a couple of goals. But the true hero of the game was Jonathan Bernier.

Thoughts and Highlights

  • Through all the good of the game, there was some bad in the first half. Robby Fabbri took a hard hit up high and had to leave the game with an upper body injury. No update on his status has been made at this time.
  • Chris Wagner had to answer the bell for this hit all game long. Tyler Bertuzzi made it a priority to get in his kitchen and he did just that. The two went at it many times.
  • Brendan Perlini started the scoring off with a pretty play. He held onto the puck and found open ice in the offensive zone to snipe home his first goal of the season.
  • It appeared the Bruins tied the game later on from a Brad Marchand deflection goal. Fortunately, the play was offside. The review just took way longer than it needed to.
  •  The game would eventually be knotted up but not without controversy. David Pastrnak got away with a blatant high stick on Luke Glendening and that freed up the ice. With no forward covering him, Pastrnak skated in and set up Torey Krug for the tying goal.
  • The Red Wings responded on the powerplay. A pretty passing display set up Andreas Athanasiou for his sixth goal of the season.
  • The Bruins were pressing while down a goal in the final minutes. With the net empty, they found a wide open Pastrnak for a one-time shot. But in miraculous fashion, Bernier got across to make the save and preserve the lead. Athanasiou added an empty net goal moments later to seal the deal, 3-1.

The effort from the Red Wings today was great, but there is no doubt about it: Jonathan Bernier stole this game. He was a wall in net, stopping 39 of 40 shots.

Once again, the aforementioned Bernier was the clear pick for Motor City MVP. Not only did he make 39 saves, but many coming in high-danger scoring areas. The save on Pastrnak was the highlight of the night, but he made plenty of those big time saves to secure the win.
