WINGS POSTGAME: Motown meltdown…again

After allowing seven goals against the Carolina Hurricanes and getting shut out against the Florida Panthers, the Detroit Red Wings returned to Little Caesars Arena looking to put a horrendous weekend behind them.

While Detroit managed to grab a first-period lead. the Nashville Predators scored five straight goals in the second period on their way to a 6-1 win Tuesday night.

Thoughts and Highlights

The Red Wings managed to hold a slim 1-0 lead after one period despite being outattempted 18-7.
Then the second period happened, and the puck possession the Predators enjoyed in the first period started to pay off in the second period.
The Red Wings have allowed at least five goals in eight of their 16 games this season. They allowed more than five 19 times last season.
Andreas Athanasiou finally broke his goalless drought, scoring his first of the season after a nice heads-up play from Filip Hronek.

Early in the second period, the Predators tied it at 1-1, as a shot from Dan Hamhuis was deflected by Nick Bonino.
About three minutes later, the Predators took the lead off a nice wrister from Kyle Turris.
And just 1:02 later, Colton Sissons beat Jimmy Howard on the far side to put the Predators up 3-1.
And the onslaught continued another 1:02 later, as Matt Duchene‘s shot deflected off Madison Bowey‘s stick and past Howard for the 4-1 lead.
Late in the second period, after Jonathan Bernier replaced Howard in net, Duchene put in a rebound to notch his second of the game and put the Predators up 5-1.
Filip Forsberg added salt to the wound, scoring on the power play to increase the lead to 6-1 in the third period.

After 14 games, the 25-year-old finally scored his first goal of the season and now has six points, good for fifth on the team. No, that’s not a typo. It’s not great, Bob.

But, from an individual standpoint, this should give Athanasiou some confidence going forward, and we’ll see if he can start scoring in bunches.
