WINGS POSTGAME: Losing streak snapped

After a less-than-ideal performance against the Philadelphia Flyers on Tuesday, the Detroit Red Wings traveled to Raleigh, North Carolina, to take on the Carolina Hurricanes, looking to end their four-game winless streak.

They did just that, winning 4-1 despite getting outplayed for the majority of the game.

THE HIGHLIGHTS

Niklas Kronwall drew first blood for the Red Wings on the power play. After a turnover in the offensive zone, Kronwall wired a shot past Petr Mrazek to give Detroit a 1-0 lead.

Andrei Svechnikov tied the game early in the second period — a deadly wrister that beat Jonathan Bernier glove side.
Frans Nielsen put the Red Wings back on top, with a nice deflection right in front of Mrazek.

Early in the third period, Jonathan Ericsson gave everyone what they really wanted — free curly fries — after scoring on a harmless-looking wrister from the point.

Dylan Larkin iced the game with a long-range empty-net goal.
Bernier was fantastic in net, making 38 saves.

FINAL THOUGHT

This picture sums up my final thought. Not only with the Blash face, but the Red Wings continue to get outshot night after night (and generally by a wide margin). Jimmy Howard and Bernier have kept them in games, but this team will not go far getting shelled on a regular basis. (For what it’s worth, the Red Wings finished -15 against the Hurricanes.)

Tremendous goaltending masked their defensive woes earlier this season, but it can’t stop the bleeding.
