Not exactly the result you want to see after a week long break. The Red Wings fall 4-2 to the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden. Through the first two periods, the team looked slow and unprepared to play. It wasn’t until the final frame when they picked up the urgency. Unfortunately, the resilient third period was a matter of too little, too late.
These two teams will square off again tomorrow night at Little Caesars Arena. Hopefully the team will bounce back in the right way for the hometown crowd.
Thoughts and Highlights
- Jimmy Howard had a strong opening period. The Detroit netminder turned away all 15 shots in the first 20 minutes of the game. His strong performance kept it tied at 0 going into the second frame.
- Towards the tail end of the second period, Dylan Larkin suffered a stinger from a Tyler Bertuzzi slap-shot to the back of the knee. Larkin went to the dressing room early, but returned for the third period to finish the game.
- The Red Wings frustration started to show while down 3-0. Justin Abdelkader got into it with Brendan Lemieux, to which Abdelkader was assessed a roughing penalty. Déjà vu anyone?

- The Rangers would score on the ensuing powerplay to make it 4-0. Detroit responded with two goals, the first of which coming from Robby Fabbri.
- Speaking of powerplays, the Red Wings didn’t get a single opportunity on the man advantage. The Rangers meanwhile drew three infractions.
- The second goal came from Valtteri Filppula. This was game No. 999 in the NHL career for Filppula. He’ll play game 1000 tomorrow night.

Larkin played a solid game through 18 minutes of ice time. Not only did he set up Fabbri for a goal, but he worked his tail off all night. It was on the defensive end of the ice where his presence was felt, playing tight and physical against the Rangers top-line.
