Coming into Friday night’s game against the Chicago Blackhawks, the Detroit Red Wings had lost their past six games and had just started their tough March schedule where 10 of their 13 opponents currently are in the playoffs.
The Blackhawks are one of those three teams not in a playoff spot, which means one of the few opportunities for the Red Wings to get a win. They did just that, snapping the losing streak and beating Chicago 2-1.

Thoughts and Highlights

  • The game was pretty even after the first period. Each team had 10 shot attempts and each goalie made seven saves.
  • Jonathan Bernier had to make a huge save early, robbing Alex DeBrincat of a goal.
  • About midway through the second period, Robby Fabbri gave the Red Wings a 2-0 lead with a power-play goal. Gustav Lindstrom picked up his first NHL point with an assist.
  • Later in the second period, Bertuzzi showed off some sick hands, going between the legs for a shot attempt, but Corey Crawford made the save.
  • Late in the second period, Patrick Kane cut the deficit to 2-1, as Jonathan Toews battled for a loose puck below the goal line, found Brandon Saad in front of the net, who dished it to a wide-open Kane.

This one was tough, as the argument could be made for Bertuzzi, as well, but Bernier gave his team a chance to win, making 32 saves.
It’s nice to see Bernier get rewarded with the win, as there have been too many times this season where he turned in a stellar performance only to see it wasted by the Red Wings’ inability to score.
