The Detroit Red Wings, fresh off snapping their 12-game losing streak on Thursday, beat the Montreal Canadiens 2-1 on Saturday for their second consecutive win.

Thoughts and Highlights

  • Jonathan Bernier had probably his best game as a Red Wing — a 43-save effort, which included big saves, such as this one in the third period.
  • Filip Zadina continues to impress in his “second” season with the Red Wings. His passes look crisp, he is generating scoring chances and his play away from the puck gets better every game. He’s making it very hard for general manager Steve Yzerman to send him back to Grand Rapids.
  • The Red Wings got on the scoreboard early in the first period, as Dylan Larkin made a nice behind-the-net pass to Tyler Bertuzzi, who beat Carey Price.
  • The game didn’t see any more goals until about midway through the third period, when Mike Green ripped a slapper from the point on the power play to make it 2-0.
  • With Price pulled for the extra attacker, Tomas Tatar pulled the Canadiens within 1 with under a minute to play.

The Red Wings have strung two consecutive wins together for the first time in a month. Granted, they got horribly outshot against the Canadiens, but Bernier stood on his head and bailed out the defense.

As mentioned earlier, he made 43 saves and kept the Canadiens from gaining any momentum. It’s a positive sign to see Bernier perform so well despite not a lot of help in front of him.
