For the first time in 9 games – the Detroit Red Wings have one a game. Like, seriously.
The boys snapped their losing skid with a 3-1 victory over the Edmonton Oilers. They picked up the lead early and maintained it all the way through. The two points will be huge for their confidence and help settle the dust. The key to tonight’s game was keeping superstars Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl in check, and for the most part they were successful.
Thoughts and Highlights
- Ken Holland made his return to Detroit for the first time since departing for Edmonton. The long term Red Wings executive was honored with a video tribute. A nice classy touch, and very deserving on Holland’s part.
- The Wings picked up an early lead on the powerplay. After some hard work to keep the puck in, Dylan Larkin found some space in front of the net and delivered.
- Shortly after Patrik Nemeth stepped up and fired his first goal as a Red Wing to the back of the net. Ever since the Danny DeKeyser injury, Nemeth has played very well. Certainly a good sign to see.
- Andreas Athanasiou can’t buy a goal right now. Still without a goal on the season, he registered several high-danger scoring chances, to no avail. He just needs one to get his confidence back and then the flood gates should open up.
- The Oilers scored their first and only goal midway through the third period to make things interesting. But ultimately, however, a Filip Hronek empty net goal helped seal the deal. Winners for the first time in 9.

Motor City MVP
Andreas Athanasiou
Originally I was leaning towards Larkin for tonight’s Motor City MVP, alas, the Oilers goal came directly off a turnover from Larkin. Athanasiou is still very deserving, creating several quality chances with his feet. He had the wheels going tonight, and you can tell he wants to get off the snide. As frustrating as his goose egg in the goal column is, he is still playing at a high level. If Athanasiou can keep up their type of urgency up, the goals will soon come his way.
