Holy jumpin’!

Can you breathe? Because I surely can’t.

Quite easily the best home opener in recent memory, the home crowd of Little Caesars Arena was treated to a performance of the ages by Anthony Mantha. The big man scored FOUR goals, including the game winner in the final minute. Add in a possible goal of the year candidate, and it was one hell of an outing.

Coming down the the literal last second, Detroit snuck away with a 4-3 win. The craziness of the game will obviously take up most of the attention, as it should, but lost in the drama is a powerplay that went 1-for-8 on the night.

Thoughts and Highlights

The opening period wasn’t very good. Detroit went down 2-0 early, but they responded. And by “they” I mean Mantha responded. He scored a natural hat trick and single handily swung the momentum of the game in Detroit’s favor.
His first goal of the night, which somehow wasn’t one of his best goals of the game:

Goal number two was just an incredible individual effort. He slipped down the half wall and charged the net, using his long reach to tuck the puck in. Highlight reel stuff.

His hat trick goal was of the more greasy caliber. Dylan Larkin got the puck to the net and Mantha was there to clean it up. His second career hat trick.

Maybe the most memorable geno of the game, Mantha fired a Hronek pass to the back of the net with 58 seconds to play. Holy mama is this guy something or what?!

The cherry on top of your heart attack came with under two seconds left. In a one goal game and the net empty, Dallas nearly found the equlizer, but Jonathan Bernier saved the day with an incredible toe save.
