They’ve done it again!
The Red Wings came into this contest winning back-to-back games from two goal deficits. Facing off against the Carolina Hurricanes, who defeated the Wings 3-1 two weeks ago, have been one of the NHL’s surprise teams this season. Trailing 3-1 in the third, a pair of Anthony Mantha goals gave the team life and fueled the comeback that was capped of with a shootout winner by Frans Nielsen.
Red Wings win 4-3!

Worth Mentioning

  • Andreas Athanasiou remains on fire. He blasted one home to get the Wings on the board first.
  • After a competitive first period, the Wings started to look like their old selves in the second period. The period as a whole was nothing short of pathetic. They were out-shot 19-7 and got into penalty trouble. Carolina took advantage and potted two goals.
  • Cue the comeback. Mantha got the ball rolling with a snipe off a two-on-one. Athanasiou picked up a primary assist for his second point of the night.
  • Mantha wasn’t done. Coming in one-on-one with Brett Pesce, Mantha’ first shot was blocked but he than immediately got a second chance off and beat Scott Darling to tie the game at three.
  • Interesting of note: all three of Detroit’s goals came from distance. It wasn’t a memorable night for Darling.
  • Late in the game the Hurricanes started to bring more heat. Jonthan Bernier made some key saves to keep it tie. Overall, Bernier was spectacular. He made a career high 49 saves off 52 shots.
  • A very exciting overtime was headlined by two desperation saves by Darling. The first on Mantha (robbing him of a hattrick) and then Mike Green moments later on a rebound.
  • In the shootout, Frans Nielsen answered the call. The best ever at the shootout roofed a quick backhander to beat Darling, and give the Red Wings a 4-3 win.

Final Thoughts

The Red Wings stole this game. While the third consecutive comeback will get all the attention, the Hurricanes dominated tonight. Outshooting Detroit 52-32, they deserved to win this game.
Fortunately, the Wings were very opportunistic and leaned heavily on their top players. Bernier gave them a chance and they managed to stick with it.
The Wings have now won 3 in a row and 6 of their last 7.
