WGD: GAME 8: RED WINGS vs. CAPITALS

What’s up Wings Nation! I’m in a massive time crunch, so I will not be able to dive too deep into tonight’s game, but here’s a quick look at how these two squads stack up as well as a peek at their lineups and starting goalies:

The Red Wings are not expected to make any changes to their forward lines or defensive pairings. The only change might be David Booth coming back in for Luke Witkowski, but that shouldn’t really have too profound of an impact on this game either way.

The Capitals have struggled offensively a little bit in the early going, so naturally the answer is to promote Tom Wilson into the top-6? What? Wilson will swap places with Andre Burakovsky, who has just two assists in seven games while playing with Nicklas Backstrom and T.J. Oshie. Weird, but hey I’ll take it as a Red Wings fan.
As for their blueline, they are without veteran Matt Niskanen, so rookie Madison Bowey has been seeing big minutes. This is a lot uglier of a group than we are used to seeing from Washington and has definitely been a contributing factor to their early-season woes.
BETWEEN THE PIPES
Petr Mrazek will get back in net for the Red Wings after Jimmy Howard‘s disastrous showing in Toronto. Mrazek also allowed a goal on the first shot he faced vs. the Maple Leafs but appeared to settle in nicely stopping 19 of the next 20 shots that he faced. The Red Wings absolutely must have great goaltending if they’re going to have any success this season–have you look at that blueline lately?
The Capitals are headed into a back-to-back set, so some thought the Red Wings could catch a break and see Phillipp Grubauer instead of Braden Holtby, but that won’t be the case. Holtby is one of the top goalies in the NHL and comes in having won three of five games while posting a 2.19 GAA and .931 SV%
