It was 12 years ago today that the Detroit Red Wings won their 11th and most recent Stanley Cup championship.

The team had one of their best regular seasons ever posting a 54-21-7 record and 115 points. The club was led by the likes of Pavel Datsyuk, Henrik Zetterberg, Nicklas Lindstrom and a tandem of great goalies in Chris Osgood and Dominik Hasek.

Detroit, who scored the third-most goals and allowed the least, squared up against the Nashville Predators in the first round of the playoffs beating them in six games before conducting a clean four-game sweep against the Colorado Avalanche in the second round. The Dallas Stars fell to the Red Wings in round three in six games.

In the finals, Detroit squared up against a strong Pittsburgh Penguins team led by young guns in Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Marc-Andre Fleury and wiley veterans in Marian Hossa, Sergi Gonchar and Gary Roberts.

Detroit took games one and two in 4-0 and 3-0 shutouts before the Pens roared back with a 3-2 win in game three. Game four saw the Red Wings bounce back with a 2-1 win, before a wild game five.

That game five saw the two teams tied up at three after regulation. It took a wild three overtime period for the game to be decided when Petr Sykora ended the game halfway through the frame.

In game six, the Red Wings came to play securing a 3-2 win and the Stanley Cup.
