This week in 1983 (July 6), the Detroit Red Wings signed goaltender Ken Holland.

While Holland only played three games for the Red Wings, it led to him getting a job with the club as a scout in Western Canada when his career ended in 1985, despite his mother thinking he should be a vacuum salesman. In those three games, Holland lost all three games allowing 10 goals on 51 shots.

Needless to say, he had a much better managerial career than playing career.

It led to an eventual Hall Of Fame career with him further taking on the teams general manager role arguably becoming one of the best in league history. Under his leadership, the Red Wings won the Central Division title 10 times, the Conference title five times, the President’s Trophy four time, the Stanley Cup three times, and more regular season and post-season games than any other team.

Holland left the organization in May 2019 when he was hired as general manager and president of hockey operations for the Edmonton Oilers.
