On this day in 1954, Tony Leswick scored in overtime and the Detroit Red Wings beat the Montreal Canadiens in game seven of the cup finals. It was a win that gave the Wings their third cup in three years.

Captain Ted Lindsay helped lead the Wings to a 37-19-14 record for first in the NHL in the regular season. His 26 goals and 62 points, however, came second to Gordie Howe’s 33 goals and 81 points.

In 12 playoff games, it was a similar group leading the way. Howe scored nine points and Lindsay eight as Alex Delvecchio scored nine points.

The Red Wings squared off against the Toronto Maple Leafs in round one defeating them in five games. In the finals, however, the Red Wings met a formidable opponent in the Montreal Canadiens in the middle of their dynasty.

Detroit held a three-to-one lead in games after four, before the Canadiens bounced back with two big wins. Thus, the two teams were taken to game seven where overtime was needed to determine a winner.

And that is where Leswick’s goal at the 4:29 mark of OT came in clutch.
