Free agent signings, big trades and legends being born make up this week’s Throwback Thursday! Here’s a look at what happened the week of June 29 – July 5 in hockey history.

Flamesnation

July 4, 1994: The Flames trade Al MacInnis to the St. Louis Blues (along with a 1997 4th round pick) in exchange for Phil Housley (along with a 1996 and 1997 2nd round pick). Both would become Hall of Famers.
June 29, 1968: Theo Fleury was born in Oxbow, Saskatchewan. He was selected 166th overall in the 1987 Draft and would go on to help the Flames win their only Stanley Cup Championship in 1989.

July 3, 1970: Teemu Selanne (the Jets’ 10th overall pick in the 1988 Draft) is born in Helsinki, Finland. He would join the Jets in 1992 and set a rookie record with 132 points in his first season in the NHL.

TLN

July 2, 2002: The Leafs sign free agent Ed Belfour. He would play three seasons with the Leafs and finish with a 93-61-15 record, along with setting a Stanley Cup Playoffs record by recording three shutouts in one playoff series in 2004.
July 1, 2015: The Leafs trade Phil Kessel to the Pittsburgh Penguins in a trade involving six players and multiple draft picks.

June 29, 2016: Ahhh, the day multiple heads simultaneously exploded in Edmonton. The Oilers traded 2010 first overall pick, Taylor Hall to the New Jersey Devils for defenceman Adam Larsson. 17 minutes later P.K. Subban was traded from Montreal to the Nashville Predators in exchange for Shea Weber, ensuring many more heads across the hockey world exploded.

July 3, 2006: After 22 season with the Red Wings, Steve Yzerman announces his retirement. He finishes his career with three Stanley Cup Championships and 1,755 points (692 goals and 1,063 assists).
June 30, 2001: The Red Wings acquire Dominik Hasek from the Buffalo Sabres in exchange for Vyacheslav Kozlov, a 2002 first round pick (Jim Slater) and a 2003 conditional pick (not exercised). 
June 29, 1994: The Red Wings acquire Mike Vernon from the Calgary Flames in exchange for Steve Chiasson. Vernon would go on to win the Stanley Cup and Conn Smythe with the Red Wings in 1997.
