Report: Red Wings among contenders to sign college UFA Ben Meyers

The Detroit Red Wings are early frontrunners to sign undrafted Minnesota Golden Gophers free agent forward Ben Meyers, according to UMass sports reporter Nathan Strauss.
Meyers, 23, just wrapped up his third year playing with the Gophers, who were eliminated from the Frozen Four tournament by the Minnesota State Mavericks on Thursday evening. In 102 career games with the Gophers, Meyers has amassed 39 goals and 95 points.
According to Daily Faceoff prospects analyst Chris Peters, Meyers is considered “the top college free agent” on the market this spring.
In 34 games with the Golden Gophers this season, Meyers racked up a team-leading 17 goals and 41 points. The left-shooting Delano, MN product stands 5’11” and clocks in at 200 pounds.
According to Strauss’ report, Meyers’ hometown Minnesota Wild have also expressed interest in the high-scoring winger. At least a dozen teams have checked in on Meyers’ availability, Strauss added.
After respectively eliminating the Michigan Wolverines and the Minnesota Golden Gophers in the semifinals, the Denver Pioneers and Minnesota State Mavericks will face off in the 2022 Frozen Four championship game on Saturday, April 9.
