Wednesday afternoon the Red Wings announced that recently acquired goaltender Eric Comrie has been placed on waivers. General manager Steve Yzerman traded for Comrie back on Nov. 30 in a one-for-one trade, dealing prospect defenseman Vili Saarijarvi to the Arizona Coyotes in exchange.
Comrie, 24, has started in two games for the Red Wings and appeared in three overall. In those appearances he posted an ugly .864 save percentage. However, his lowly numbers could be a product of little playing time over the entire season. Combined with his three games in Detroit, Comrie started four games in the AHL on a conditioning stint during his brief with the Coyotes organization.
Should Comrie clear waivers, he is expected to be assigned to the Grand Rapids Griffins. This move comes in lieu of Jimmy Howard’s return from injury. Howard started for the Griffins Tuesday night on a conditioning stint and should soon be brought back up to Detroit.
Worth noting, Comrie has already been claimed on waivers this season. Arizona claimed the netminder from Winnipeg at the start of the season to fill in as a stop-gap in a backup role. The Toronto Maple Leafs have been rumored to be in on the backup goaltender market, so they could be a team to watch for in the Comrie sweepstakes.
