The Detroit Red Wings have traded the 16th overall pick in the 2016 NHL entry draft and the $7.5M cap hit of Pavel Datsyuk’s contract to the Arizona Coyotes for Joe Vitale, the 20th overall pick and the Coyotes second round pick (53rd overall). 

Getting out from under Datsyuk’s massive cap hit was top priority and it was believed the asking price was going to be either Pulkkinen or Jurco to make that happen. After Carolina managed to pull Teravainen away from Chicago for taking on Bryan Bickell’s cap hit, things were looking bleak for the Red Wings being able to move the contract without suffering a heavy loss. 

Their luck seemed to change come draft time. After a long delay and a seemingly longer commercial break the announcement was made. Initial reaction was a bit shocking as Jakob Chychrun had continued to slide. As the 4th ranked North American skater, here at the Wings Nation we chose not to even profile the young defenceman because we thought it was impossible he’d still be on the board. So the excitement to have a shot at such a great defencemen was overwhelming at first but once you step back and look at the deal, it is a good move for the organization. 

Most importantly, by moving Datsyuk and taking Vitale, the Wings clear up $6.3M in cap space. This is essential for not only just the general health of a competitive roster but it also gives Wings fans hope that they’re going to make a serious push for Stamkos. This at least gives Holland the wiggle room he needs to make some serious moves to this roster. Plus, the Wings get a first round pick as well, only 4 spots further back. If rumours are true and they were eyeing up Rubtsov anyways, they essentially moved the contract, added an additional second round pick and got they guy they wanted anyways. With players like Gauthier also still on the board, it’s a move that makes sense for the Wings.
